January Newsletter

As the New Year begins, we are really looking forward to what God has in store for us at Highland. We believe that the key to our spiritual growth—both as individuals and as a church body—is to spend time with God in the word and prayer. A new year is a great time to renew our commit to these spiritual disciplines. To that end, as a church we are encouraging our members to read their Bibles daily with the goal of reading through the whole Bible in one year.

One great way to accomplish the goal of reading through the Bible is to follow a structured plan. Some people find it difficult to know where to begin; other people may turn to the same passages and books over and over again, while unintentionally neglecting the more difficult passages of Scripture. A Bible reading plan provides a guide that can help readers work through the Scriptures in a systematic way.

I would also like to provide a few caveats to keep in mind when starting your journey through Scripture. First, the most important thing is that you are reading some every day. In other words, if you are not able to read every chapter for that day, that’s okay, read what you can. Some people fall behind on their plan and then end up getting discouraged. If it takes you two years to read through the Bible, that’s okay. Secondly, quality is better than quanity. Reading large portions of Scripture every day is a good thing, but we want to make sure that we allowing time for meditation and prayer. We want to make sure that we are allowing the word to take root in our hearts so that it may bear much fruit in us. Again, if it takes you two years instead of one year, then that’s fine.

With these two caveats in mind, I want to commend to you the practice of daily Bible reading! If you would like to join us in reading through the whole Bible in a year, know that there are many good plans. Here is a list of a few options.
